A nine-kilometre-long unspoilt beach on Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura could be summed up in a single word: beaches. That’s why it’s easy to describe the spectacular nature of Sotavento: it’s the island’s best-known beach worldwide. Its length alone—around nine kilometres—leaves visitors speechless. At low tide, the island gains so much ground that some wonder whether it is the largest of the Canary Islands. Its constant sunshine, the huge pools that form and its endless golden sand make it worthy of another synonym: paradise.

The go-to beach for windsurfing and kitesurfing in Jandía

In fact, Sotavento comprises five beaches: La Barca, Risco del Paso, Mirador, Malnombre and Los Canarios. The endless walks alongside its crystal-clear waters don’t even need to wait for low tide. A sandbar 100 to 300 metres from the shore creates a three-kilometre lagoon, ideal for beginners to windsurfing or kitesurfing, both of which are very popular in the area. A simple glance around reveals the solitude stretching for miles across the sand, ocean and pure enjoyment. A real treat.
