La Alcogida Ecomuseum
Fuerteventura’s traditional crafts, brought to life
In the north-central part of the island of Fuerteventura, near the village of Tefir, lies a unique museum: La Alcogida. It is unique because it is a living museum: visitors can watch the island’s artisans at work in their various trades and interact with them. The ecomuseum comprises seven restored houses that exemplify the island’s various architectural styles, ranging from simple, unadorned farmhouses to stately homes with balconies, two-storey wooden staircases and tiled roofs.
Discover the life of the Majorero peasant
The museum offers an insight into the life of the Majorero peasant – the name given to the people of Fuerteventura – from the 19th century right up until just a few decades ago. It features a good representation of the island’s domestic animals, such as goats, donkeys and camels; and an equally good representation of its flora: prickly pears, tabaiba and palm trees coexist in the arid landscape. It also offers the chance to learn about the water collection system, bread ovens and old threshing floors and haylofts.
