Grain Museum, La Cilla
Discover the agricultural history of Fuerteventura
The Grain Museum is housed within the Casa de La Cilla, located in La Oliva, in the north of Fuerteventura. This old stone building, of great historical value, was restored to accommodate the museum. Visitors can learn about the island’s agricultural history and will be surprised by the significant role that cereals played in life on Fuerteventura. During this fascinating visit, which includes a photographic exhibition that helps visitors better understand farm work, you’ll see how factors such as overgrazing contributed to the formation of the island’s current austere landscape.
Relive the grain harvest
The Grain Museum is the perfect place to learn how grain was harvested in the past. A collection of objects, tools, photographs and information relating to agricultural tasks captures part of the history of Fuerteventura, which for many centuries was known as the “breadbasket of the Canary Islands” as the grain needed to feed the entire archipelago was grown on its land. Visitors can watch a re-enactment of the harvesting process, examine the agricultural tools and listen to an explanation of the farm work. The Museum also organises recreational and educational activities.
