PR-FV 54 Morro Jable – Pico de la Zarza

Un recorrido ofrece vistas espectaculares de costas vírgenes y naturaleza salvaje, ideal para amantes de la aventura y la observación de aves amenazadas.

The PR-FV 54 trail offers one of the best views in the Canary Islands; after all, Pico de La Zarza, at 807 metres, is the highest peak on Fuerteventura.

We’ll start this short walk by the Morro Jable roundabout, which is shaped like a ship’s masts and sails. We’ll head up a small avenue to the first junction, where we’ll turn left and, after a bend, turn right onto a dirt track that leads to a water reservoir. From this point, we’ll enter the Jandía Natural Park, climbing up Pico de las Atalayejas, where we’ll see, to the south, a golf resort. From here, the path climbs steadily, amongst wild tabaiba (Euphorbia regis-jubae), verodes (Kleinia neriifolia) and jorjaos (Asteriscus sericeus), until it reaches its end at Pico de la Zarza. From here, we will enjoy breathtaking views of the coastlines that bathe the periphery of the Jandía peninsula: Barlovento to the west and Sotavento to the east.

This is a special place, where the wild beauty is accentuated by the lulling sound of the waves at Cofete Beach, interrupted only by the occasional cry of the various birds seeking refuge on the summit. Among them, two critically endangered species stand out: the Barbary falcon (Falco pelegrinoides) and the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus majorensis).
