SL-FV 53 Cardón – El Tanquito
Our local trail follows the route taken by the devotees of the Virgin of El Tanquito, who hold their pilgrimage on the first Saturday in June, carrying the statue of the Virgin from the Cardón chapel to El Tanquito. This pilgrimage has been held since the early 20th century, when the figure of this Virgin was first discerned in the rock face of a cave.
We will begin our walk in the village of Cardón, from where we will set off, past gavyas and greenhouses, towards the Barranco de los Tanques. We will then ascend between El Mojón and La Cuesta Vieja, surrounded by sparse vegetation consisting mainly of gorse (Launaea arborescens). We will continue towards El Pedregullo until we come upon a circular area surrounded by stones where the faithful rest during their pilgrimage to El Tanquito. At this point, the landscape delights us with a subtle contrast between the rounded hills to the north and the rugged relief of the Jandía ridge to the south. We will pass the Majada del Huertito on our right, walking amongst tabaibas (Euphorbia spp.) and verodes (Kleinia neriifolia), and observe the scale of the Cofete arch from its start, at the Isthmus of La Pared, to its end at Punta Pesebre.
If we continue a little further, we will come to a gate which we must close behind us. This indicates that in a few metres we will reach the end of this short route, El Tanquito, a sacred place where the faithful come to ask for favours and make promises to the Virgin.
