Bayuyo Volcano

Bayuyo Volcano

This place is renowned for its unique geology, breathtaking views and archaeological remains, offering an unforgettable cultural and natural experience.

One of the oldest and most iconic

The Bayuyo volcano is located in the north of the island, near the village of Lajares, and forms part of a line of volcanic cones stretching from Lobos Island to Montaña Colorada. The Bayuyo volcano has two craters, one of which has a diameter of around 300 metres and a depth of around 50 metres. Its eruption, some 10,000 years ago, was crucial to the formation of the island, as its lava increased the surface area of Fuerteventura by around 100 km².

Great geological interest

The Bayuyo volcano is a site of great geological, scenic and cultural interest, as its surroundings contain archaeological remains from pre-Hispanic times, such as circular dry-stone structures that served as dwellings and livestock pens. Furthermore, the Bayuyo volcano offers spectacular views of the northern part of the island, where other volcanoes such as Calderón Hondo, Las Calderas and Montaña Colorada can be seen.

How to visit

The Bayuyo volcano can be visited by following a signposted trail that starts from the village of Lajares and is approximately 4 km long. The trail is of medium difficulty and takes about an hour and a half to complete. The Bayuyo volcano is undoubtedly one of the volcanoes on Fuerteventura that is well worth exploring and admiring.
