Casa de Las Simonas. Interpretation Centre for the Battles of El Cuchillete and Tamasite
La Casa de Las Simonas: A historical landmark
La Casa de Las Simonas is the visitor centre where you can learn about and understand two important historical events that took place in Fuerteventura in 1740: The Battles of El Cuchillete and Tamasite, when English privateers attacked the village of Tuineje and were proudly defeated by the island’s militias and the residents of the local villages, the first time caught off guard and armed only with stones and sticks.
The Fiestas Juradas de San Miguel Arcángel
Since then, the victories have been celebrated every year by commemorating the battles during the Fiestas Juradas de San Miguel Arcángel, which have acquired such historical, social and cultural significance that they have been awarded the highest recognition: Festivals of National Tourist Interest, in addition to their previous classifications as Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC) and of Regional Tourist Interest. A tremendous display of enthusiasm, cultural sentiment, uniqueness and living history.
