Cofete Beach
A 12-kilometre stretch of unspoilt beach on Fuerteventura
One of the wildest, least developed and largest beaches in the Canary Islands defies description. Located in the north of the Jandía peninsula, in the south of Fuerteventura, Cofete is a visual feast of endless golden sand, a wild ocean and a total sense of freedom. Its 12 kilometres, the scarcity of houses, the absence of tarmac roads and the fact that it’s best visited in a 4×4 say a lot about its character. The term ‘unspoilt’ was simply invented for beaches like this.
Swimming by the Jandía mountains
Getting to Cofete isn’t exactly easy. The track is made of earth and stones. It stretches for 8.5 kilometres, with some tricky sections, though these can be managed with a bit of skill. Once at the viewpoint, your eyes will widen at the immensity of the Jandía mountains, the headland known as El Islote, and the fury of the Atlantic, which makes it advisable to take the utmost care. After passing a small village with a restaurant, all that remains is to park and enjoy hours of walking north or south. A stunning beach will more than justify the trip.
