El Hierro

El Hierro

This destination is ideal for surfers, offering fast, tubular waves in a volcanic setting, perfect for manoeuvres and water-based adventures.

Fuerteventura’s most famous surfing spot

The most famous wave for surfing on the island of Fuerteventura is found at the El Hierro spot, in the north of the island, next to Majanicho beach. Its fame is due to the consistency and quality of its breaks, making it one of the most popular waves among the island’s surfers. To get there, you can use the dirt tracks connecting the area with the town centres of Corralejo and El Cotillo, or the tarmac road from Majanicho towards the village of Lajares. And when it comes to parking, you can leave your car right at the spot itself.

A fast, tubular wave near Majanicho beach

The wave at this El Hierro spot has two distinct peaks that break over a volcanic seabed several metres deep. The main one is a very fast, hollow left-hand wave with a medium run, ideal for performing powerful manoeuvres. The right-hand wave is shorter but also forms quality barrels. Between September and May, with high tide conditions, E-S-SE-SW winds and N-NE-NW-W swells, is when this spot lives up to its reputation. Although entering the water at low tide is not difficult, the use of water shoes is recommended.
