House of the Colonels

House of the Colonels

This place is notable for its 17th-century architecture and its military and cultural history, and offers dramatised tours that enhance the visitor experience.

The latent grandeur of the manor

The Casa de Los Coroneles, situated on the outskirts of the town of La Oliva, capital of the northern municipality of the same name, is the finest example of civil architecture in Fuerteventura. This 17th-century mansion lay abandoned and in ruins throughout the 20th century, until its restoration in 2006. It is now open to visitors and stands out against the landscape with its majestic wooden balconies, crowned by imposing crenellated towers – from which the defence against pirate raids was mounted – whilst inside, a bright and spacious Canarian courtyard shines out. Walking through its galleries and corridors, alongside the permanent exhibition on the history of the house, is to relive the stately and military power that was exercised from these rooms for centuries.

Cultural programme and dramatised historical tour

Recently, the house’s activities have expanded with an interesting programme of cultural, artistic and educational events, organised by the La Regenta Art Centre. It is also well worth visiting as part of the so-called Route of the Colonels, an itinerary coordinated by the historic Raíz del Pueblo association, at a very reasonable price. This is a dramatised tour, available in several languages, featuring actors in period costume who guide visitors through the Museo de la Cilla, the Church of La Candelaria, Casa Mané, the Mercado de las Tradiciones, and the Casa de los Coroneles itself.
