The town of Antigua

The town of Antigua

This destination is renowned for its cultural heritage, traditional architecture and windmills, offering visitors a unique and authentic experience.

The historic village of the windmills

There are villages whose cultural heritage speaks of a glorious past. This is the case with Antigua, on the central plain of Fuerteventura: its old town harbours a collection of great historical and artistic value, reflected in its architecture. But if anything defines the landscape of Antigua, it is its windmills, which stand out against the plain and whose sails, as in days gone by, are turned by the gentle, warm breeze of the trade winds.

History and traditional architecture in Fuerteventura

Visitors have several must-see stops in this traditional village. The first could be the Antigua Windmill Museum, where a fully restored building demonstrates how grain was ground in the past. This space is housed in a beautiful manor house, and inside you can purchase a wide variety of the island’s artisanal products. Within the town centre, you can see examples of working-class houses and mansions belonging to the wealthy classes, such as the Casona del Portón.
