Corralejo Dunes Natural Park
The largest dunes in the Canary Islands are on Fuerteventura
Corralejo Natural Park is the ideal place to enjoy the desert beauty of the island of Fuerteventura. This coastal strip, measuring 2.5 by 10.5 kilometres and situated in the north-east of the island, comprises two harmoniously contrasting areas. In the north, next to the major tourist resort of Corralejo, lies the largest dune field in the Canary Islands, a vast expanse of white sand lapped by the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The southern section is the complete opposite: volcanic, with ochre and red hues, and rugged, dramatic formations.
Things to do in Corralejo Natural Park
The FV-1 road, which connects the capital, Puerto del Rosario, with the town of Corralejo, passes through here, but you must leave your car at a lay-by and enter the park on foot. To enjoy the beaches of Corralejo, you’ll need to bring a towel, water and sun cream; and, optionally, a swimsuit if you’re not a nudist, and a kite. To soak up the volcanic landscape, you’ll need to put on your boots to climb the 300 metres of the Montaña Roja volcano, and bring a camera to capture the islands of Lanzarote and La Graciosa rising above the sea.
