Discover how salt is traditionally extracted from the sea
The Salt Museum, in the west of Fuerteventura, offers an insight into how salt is traditionally extracted from the sea before becoming a staple ingredient in any kitchen. It is situated near Caleta de Fuste, where the island’s first salt flats were built centuries ago. The white walls of the museum building and the impressive whale skeleton placed next to the salt flats make the Salt Museum instantly recognisable as visitors approach along the road.
Visiting the salt flats of Fuerteventura
The museum is divided into two areas. The first consists of an exhibition inside the tranquil museum building, featuring information panels and screenings. Outside, visitors can stroll amongst the salt flats, which are fully operational, and observe how this staple of Canarian cuisine is produced using traditional methods. A café and a shop, where you can purchase the salt produced at the museum itself, round off the visit.
